Using Microsoft FrontPage to Update Your Website

It's not our intent to provide training on how to use FrontPage. These instructions assume that you are familiar with FrontPage and how to create and modify webpages with it.

You can use FrontPage to update your website by accessing the site directly, or by publishing to it.

Accessing the site directly

If you access the website directly, the webpages that you create are updated directly on the server. The advantage of this method is that the webpages don't take up space on your PC. The disadvantage of this method is that you don't have personal copies of the files on your PC if something should happen to the files on the server (while we do backup our servers for disaster purposes, you are responsible for maintaining copies of your files and databases).

These are the steps to access the site directly:

1. Start the FrontPage program and click on "File" and then "Open Web..."

2. Enter the name of your domain in the "Web name:" input box (be sure to include "http://")

3. Enter your site's Administrator ID and password from your Welcome Email at the prompt to connect to your site. Be sure to click on the "Remember my password" checkbox  - this option must be selected.

4. In FrontPage, click on "View" and then "Folders" to view the webpages on the site.

Publishing to the website

When you want to using publishing to update the website, the webpages are created on your PC first and then published (uploaded) to the website. The advantage of this method is that the you have personal copies of the files on your PC if something should happen to the files on the server (while we do backup our servers for disaster purposes, you are responsible for maintaining copies of your files and databases). This is the method we recommend.

These are the steps to publish the site. It's assumed that you have already created a web on your PC and are now ready to place the files on your site.  Make sure that your home page (default page) is called "index.html" or "index.htm". If it is called "index.htm", then you MUST delete the placeholder file "index.html" already on the site or your page will not display.

1. Start the FrontPage program and click on "File" and then "Open Web..." and open the web that you've previously created on your PC.

2. Click on "File" and then "Publish Web...".

3. Enter the name of your domain in the "Enter publish destination:" input box (be sure to include "http://")

4. Enter your site's Administrator ID and password from your Welcome Email at the prompt to connect to your site. Be sure to click on the "Remember my password" checkbox - this option must be selected.

5. Click on the "Publish" button on the Publish Web screen.
